Welcome to AVID! AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, and the program’s goal is college readiness for ALL students. While it may seem early to think about college now, the choices students make in middle school will have an impact on their high school career, and in turn their college potential.
AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. 6th Grade AVID While AVID encompasses a great many things, this introductory course is primarily about helping students learn to be successful in middle school so they can succeed in high school. We will learn and practice skills in organization, note taking, reading and writing, and critical thinking. We will also explore our motivations for attending college, and foster an environment of like minded academic drive. Finally, we will work towards improving our brains, in the knowledge that the harder we work, the smarter we can become. At Stonegate Elementary, almost ALL 6th grade students will take this introduction to AVID, as a way to help them transition into 6th grade. Then, students that are interested in continuing the AVID path will have the opportunity to apply to be a part of our 7th and 8th grade AVID classes. If your student is not in AVID now, they will have it in the Spring Semester. 8th Grade AVID The 8th Grade AVID course will emphasize preparation for academic rigorous courses in high school, including Honor's and AP classes. This academic elective class will focus on college readiness with weekly tutorials, team building, critical thinking, reading and writing, We will explore and compare the CSU, UC and Community College Systems. ALL avid students will take the PSAT or Explore (pre-ACT) tests. The AVID system is designed to take determined students that ARE NOT sure how to get into college and navigate them through the educational system. It is true that AVID is a lot of work, but with Individual Determination, the sky is the limit! |
